The STEM Harvest Mural Transforms Downtown Hays

On the south-facing wall of the STEM Harvest building, a vibrant fusion of science and creativity has turned a blank space into a story of discovery. Created by The Brickmob, this mural is more than decoration—it’s a visual prologue for every shopper, athlete, and dreamer passing through our busiest corridor. Our mission? To spark curiosity before you even step through the door.

ANCHORED IN GENIUS

Nikola Tesla:

Brimming with blue energy, Tesla’s coils power the mural, connecting his wireless legacy to modern EV innovation.

Albert Einstein:

Surrounded by the curvature of spacetime, his iconic E = mc^2 flows like a ribbon of light through the design.

The Shared Vision:

Between these giants, illuminated circuits symbolize the "light of knowledge" that drives every student at STEM Harvest.

Pioneering Code

A subtle moth in the corner honors Grace Hopper, the computing giant who coined the term "debugging." It serves as a reminder that women have always been at the forefront of technology and at STEM Harvest, we embrace every "bug" as a chance to learn.

The STEM Harvest Difference

Discover the Easter Eggs The mural is a playground for the observant, layered with "Easter Eggs" that celebrate tech culture. Look for Tux the Linux Penguin representing open-source innovation and the legendary Konami Code hovering above our doorway, both of which are a nod to the digital "power-ups" we provide our students. You’ll even find a moth, a tribute to computing pioneer Grace Hopper and the origin of the term "debugging." Positioned just below a glowing blue atom and mechanical gears are the unmistakable, theater-seat silhouettes of the cast from Mystery Science Theater 3000 where a human host and his robot companions  sit at the bottom edge of the wall, playfully "watching" the mural's scientific achievements unfold like a movie on the big screen. These symbols represent the grit, humor, and DIY spirit cultivated inside our walls.

Representation: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants The artwork anchors itself with two titans of science. The left side features a striking portrait of Nikola Tesla situated below a brilliantly lit bulb. He is flanked by a massive, crackling Tesla coil and a dynamic, stylized representation actively harnessing raw electrical currents in our electric vehicle chargers. On the far right, a towering portrait of Albert Einstein contemplates the universe, accompanied by his groundbreaking mass-energy equivalence formula. While icons like Tesla and Einstein anchor the design, the mural intentionally honors the diverse pioneers who shaped our world. A stylized Black Hole pays tribute to Dr. Katie Bouman’s breakthrough algorithms, while the references to Grace Hopper highlight the vital role of Women in STEM. We believe that innovation thrives on inclusion and this wall serves as a daily reminder that the next great scientific breakthrough can come from anyone in our communities.

Innovation Alley: A Threshold of Wonder in Downtown Hays More than just public art, this mural frames the entrance to western Kansas’s premier hub for robotics, coding, virtual reality, digital literacy, and much more. Our logo, a stalk of wheat intertwined with circuitry with an atomic orbital design, perfectly captures the intersection of our deep Kansas heritage and our future-forward mission. It marks the transition from the sidewalk to a space where curiosity is harvested and the innovators of tomorrow are grown.
